"Establishing parentage" in the state of Washington means deciding who the legal parents of a child are if the mother and father were not legally married when the child was born. For the court to determine custody or child support rights, the issue of paternity must first be established.
Either the mother or the father of the child may file the Petition to Establish Parental Relationship of a child. In such an action, the court can require the parties to submit to DNA testing to include or exclude parentage, as well as make orders regarding child support, child custody and attorneys fees.
